AI‑Powered Digital Twins for EUROCONTROL: A New Era in Aviation Flow Management
Together with EUROCONTROL we are exploring the future of aviation flow management through an AI-powered Digital Twin of European airspace. By combining immersive 3D visualisation, real-time data, and intelligent routing, this initiative enables faster, more informed decisions in one of the world’s most complex air traffic networks.
A clearer view on Europe's complex airspace
EUROCONTROL oversees one of the busiest and most interconnected air traffic systems in the world. Every day, Network Managers coordinate thousands of flights, respond to disruptions, and ensure smooth operations across national borders.
Traditional 2D tools have long supported these operations, but they fall short in today’s increasingly complex environment. They limit visibility into vertical airspace structures and make it difficult to fully understand how delays and disruptions cascade across regions.
As air traffic grows in volume and complexity, EUROCONTROL needed a more predictive and intuitive way to manage operations—one that integrates real-time data, reveals interactions across altitude layers, and enables stronger, faster cross-border collaboration.
The Solution
The Solution
A 3D Digital Twin of European Airspace
In collaboration with Mr. Watts, Cronos Europa’s sister company within De Cronos Groep, EUROCONTROL developed a proof-of-concept Digital Twin. This immersive 3D environment represents the European aviation network, allowing users to visualise both horizontal and vertical flight paths in one unified view.
Immersive Interaction through Virtual Reality
Using Meta Quest™ headsets, teams can explore holographic representations of the airspace while staying aware of their physical surroundings. This makes complex traffic patterns easier to interpret and enables more natural, interactive discussions between stakeholders.
AI-Powered Decision Support
AI components analyse both real-time and historical data to suggest alternative routing options. This helps Network Managers detect potential conflicts earlier and evaluate solutions more efficiently, improving responsiveness in time-critical situations.
A Shared Operational Environment
The Digital Twin creates a collaborative virtual space where multiple stakeholders—whether in the same room or across different countries—can interact with the same data simultaneously. This shared context enhances communication and coordination across Europe’s aviation ecosystem.
“This project has the potential of empowering more stakeholders than just the OPS Room. It can be a foundational step towards smarter, data-driven, and AI-augmented aviation flow traffic management.”
— Benjamin Cramet, NM Lab Manager @ EUROCONTROL
The Digital Twin prototype has already demonstrated significant progress for EUROCONTROL. It enables earlier conflict detection, supports AI-assisted routing decisions, and transforms complex operational data into intuitive 3D insights.
As a result, teams benefit from improved situational awareness, faster collaboration, and stronger decision-making. The prototype now serves as a foundation for a fully integrated, real-time Digital Twin—paving the way toward smarter, more predictive, and AI-augmented airspace management.
