Growing by learning: Meet multi-skilled software engineer Bjarne Serneels

While Bjarne Serneels’ official title is Mixed Reality Developer, he’s better known as a multi-skilled software engineer around here. Though he’s not one to talk at length, he sums up his daily tasks simply as ‘making sure applications run smoothly.’ But what’s his day-to-day work experience like? Playground for new tech

Bjarne is what your everyday IT person would call an all-round software developer. But there’s so much more to what he contributes to Mr. Watts. “Essentially, I know how to cover both back and front end, but that’s just a small part of what I do,” he explains. “What usually keeps me busy is exploring new technologies and investigating how they could be of value for Mr. Watts and our clients. I guess you could say that Mr. Watts is like a playground for me.”

 

Rather than using existing development frameworks and libraries, Bjarne prefers building things from scratch. “I like understanding how everything works and is tied together, plus it gives me a sense of control,” Bjarne confirms.

Open culture of knowledge sharing

Bjarne not only applies his findings to various client projects but also shares them with his colleagues. “We frequently hold meetings with the rest of the development team to exchange ideas and insights”, he explains. “It's great to see how Mr. Watts promotes open communication and collaboration throughout the company."

 

While knowledge sharing is essential, what Bjarne appreciates most about his job is Mr. Watts's people-centric approach. “Being able to share knowledge and discuss personal matters shows that they genuinely care about their employees,” he says. “My medical situation requires afternoon breaks and frequent remote work, and they've been incredibly accommodating. At Mr. Watts, they really value work-life balance, and they know that team bonding is a big part of that. So, we make sure to plan lots of team-building activities to help us all connect and have fun together.”

Always learning, always adding value

Even in his spare time, Bjarne dedicates himself to researching new technologies and methodologies that can benefit Mr. Watts. “Not long ago, I was deep into learning about neural networks and computer vision”, he recalls. “A few weeks later, I incorporated these concepts into a project for our client. After we completed the project, it was clear that my insights significantly contributed to its success. That's what truly motivates me,” Bjarne shares.

 

Continuous learning is Bjarnes mantra, as he believes it enriches both his personal and professional growth. “I'm excited to keep growing and contribute to shaping the future of Mr. Watts,” he concludes.
